Has AI Made Your Life Easier, or Just Busier?
"Is this actually making my life easier?"
...or have I quietly built myself a very clever new full-time job.
If you are a capable, high-performing woman who has gone down the AI rabbit hole, you know the feeling. You can see the potential. You know this technology is going to change the way we live and work. And right now it can also feel like one more thing to learn, manage, test and keep up with.
You have made a million decisions before 9am. You are the one who remembers everything for everyone. And now there is a shiny new tool promising to help, sitting on top of the pile with everything else.
That is the friction. Not the technology itself. The quiet expectation that you will become the system that runs it.
The problem was never you. It was the design.
Here is what I realised. The problem is not AI. And it is certainly not you.
The problem is that we have been taught to use AI to do more. More output. More productivity. More squeezed into the same tired day. Nobody handed us a way to use it to live better.
I spent more than 25 years as an architect, designing homes and workplaces so people could live and work better. My whole career has been one question asked over and over. Why is this harder than it needs to be. And how do we design it so it holds.
A few years ago I downsized my family's whole life and travelled Australia in a caravan. I expected to miss the space and the things. Instead I found the one thing I had been chasing for years. Ease. It turned out ease never came from having more. It came from good design. From systems built around the life I actually wanted to live.
So when AI arrived, I did not ask what it could do. I asked the only question that has ever mattered to me. Can this be designed to give me my life back, instead of quietly taking more of it.
I do not want to spend my life becoming better at using AI. I want AI to help me become better at living my life.
That is the experiment.
How to make AI quiet the mental load instead of adding to it
Most people are using AI as another app to check. Another tab. Another thing that pings for attention. That is the fast road to the second job you never signed up for.
Here is how I am designing it differently.
Give it the mundane, not the meaningful. AI should take the repetitive tasks and the millions of tiny decisions that drain you before lunch. The meal plan. The recurring list. The admin that lives in your head. Keep the decisions that genuinely need you. Hand over the ones that never did.
Design it to work in the background. A well-designed system does not ask for your attention. It runs quietly and hands you the result. If a tool needs constant managing, it is not saving your time. It is spending it.
Use it to reduce decisions, not multiply options. Decision fatigue is the real weight most women are carrying. The goal is not more choice. It is fewer choices, better made, already handled.
Test it, then be ruthless. I keep what earns its place and delete what does not. If a use for AI adds friction instead of removing it, it goes. No loyalty to the tool. Only loyalty to the life.
That is the filter. Less stress, less chaos, less decision fatigue. More calm, more time, more moments that actually matter.
What all this time is really for
I have no interest in becoming more productive just to cram more into the day. That is not the point. That was never the point.
I want less noise. Less domestic drag. Less time lost to the small things. And more time for the life sitting underneath all of it.
The bush and the beach. Fresh air and sunshine. The slow morning that does not begin with a list. The things that make a life feel beautiful, rather than simply full.
Because time is the new luxury. Not more things. Time, clarity, and the space to breathe.
This is for you if
You are tired of the domestic drag. You have made a million decisions before 9am. And you are the one holding it all together for everyone else.
You have gone down the rabbit hole, and now you are looking for the light at the end of it. You are not the only one.
So I am running the experiment out loud. Finding what genuinely works. Filtering out what does not. If it works, I will share it. If it does not, I will save you the time.
Follow along as I use AI to build a calmer, simpler LUX life. More time. Less overwhelm. More of what matters.
